AWE is leading the way in connecting with schools through educational charities like the Education Business Partnerships (EBP) and Basingstoke Consortium,to create a greater impact in helping improve students’ skills.
AWE supports pupils from a young age, as evidence has shown that early interventions are a cost-effective way, to raise young people’s aspirations and help develop a future pipeline.
In Basingstoke, AWE works with Basingstoke Consortium who are leaders in their field to ensure that we are providing the right encounters at the right time to young people.
Basingstoke Consortium provides us with opportunities to proactively connect young people to the world of work through business by educating, inspiring and preparing them for the future.
CEO of Basingstoke Consortium and EBP South, Cath Longhurst, says, “It is important that young people are inspired by businesses like AWE into different careers to allow them to make informed decisions about options, career paths to ensure they are choosing the right subjects and gaining the skills needed by industry.
“We need to make the variety of occupations more visible so that young people know about them and can aspire to them.”
“Opportunities provided by Basingstoke Consortium include attending large interactive events like TeenTech – an annual event in which AWE takes part – which aim to educate young people about careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths). It is important that AWE attend these events as by the age of 15-16 one third of their career interests lie in just 10 occupations.”

Basingstoke Consortium is proud to have been awarded a strategic grant from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. The grant of £40,000 in Year 1, with a view to further funding over the following 4 years, is designed to help the Consortium support the Council’s strategic aim to ensure a work-ready workforce by linking employers with education providers.
Creating links between business and education is at the core of Basingstoke Consortium’s mission to inspire and prepare young people for the world of work. The grant will support the Consortium’s work in creating opportunities for young people to learn more about the key growth business sectors in Basingstoke, to help inform their future career choices and give them a real understanding of how their learning at school relates to the world of work.
Cath Longhurst, Basingstoke Consortium CEO, said, “It is great that the Council is investing in the future generation of employees. Our strong links with schools and businesses mean that this grant will enable us to maintain and grow the level of interaction between the local economy and education.”
The grant was awarded by the Council following proposals outlining how Basingstoke Consortium, working together with employers, education providers and young people, would support key Council priorities for the borough.
The Council’s Cabinet member for Communities and Community Safety Cllr Simon Bound said: “These consortium projects will support young people’s transition from primary to secondary education and onto post 16 education.
Our funding will enable the development of programmes to build young people’s ‘employability’ as they progress through education and, working with local businesses and other key partners, offer new opportunities for young people to develop their entrepreneurial and digital skills.
This will help them achieve their full potential and encourage them to develop skills needed by local employers in key growth areas for the borough’s economy.”
Basingstoke Consortium works closely with all the schools and colleges in the Basingstoke area and works in close partnership with Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and with a number of key businesses through its ‘Skillstree Programme’.
Work Experience has been about for many years and often something that we remember from our childhood.
Work Experience provides young people with the opportunity to experience what it is like to be in a work place, learning about an industry, and gaining an insight into potential future careers.
It helps schools to reach several of The Gatsby Career Benchmarks that set a world-class standard for schools and colleges. There is considerable evidence and research that the Gatsby Benchmarks have a positive impact on young people’s future careers.
Most work experience placements take place when young people are in their final years of school and they go out for 1 or 2 weeks; with different schools going out on placements at different times of the year from September to July.
One of the organisers of work experience across the South Coast is Basingstoke Consortium with works jointly with EBP South, both charities that connects businesses with schools.
The Work Experience Team is a one-point of contact for businesses across Hampshire to provide work experience to multiple schools as well as providing advice to businesses of all sizes on how they can provide work experience.
The Work Experience Team manage the work placement process so all businesses have to do is let EBP South know the role(s) and their availability to take students on and they will do the rest.
Ian Saynor, Contracts Manger said ‘Work Experience isn’t just a great opportunity for young people but also the businesses. Many businesses learn a lot from the students and they are a great help to the business.’
The Work Experience Team also manages extended work experience placements. These have increased considerably over the past few years with both businesses and schools recognising the benefits.
Extended work experience roles can lead into apprenticeships for young people. They take place for a minimum of 6 weeks for 1 to 2 days per week.
Many organisations across all industries of all sizes from small local businesses to large corporate companies offer work experience.

On Friday 26th January EBP South expanded to join forces with Basingstoke Consortium and now operates within all of Hampshire, Isle of Wight and surrounding areas. The expansion comes as EBP South celebrate their 20th year.
Dawn Baxendale, EBP South Chair of the Board said 'I am pleased to announce that EBP South has joined forces with Basingstoke Consortium. Both organisations will be overseen and managed by CEO, Cath Longhurst and one board of trustees.
EBP South began as the Education Business Partnership for Portsmouth & South-East Hampshire in 1997, since then their mission which is still at the core of the organisation is, ‘To inspire and prepare young people for the world of work’.
In 2015 EBP South extended their services to schools in Southampton and New Forest following the collapse of Solent Education Business Partnership and became EBP South.
The company has gone from strength to strength since 1997. They started off in Portsmouth City Council with 7 members of staff and now have 43 staff with their Head Offices in Lakeside North Harbour.
In 2016/17 EBP South alone worked with 17,061 young people. Now they have joined with Basingstoke Consortium their reach and impact across Hampshire will dramatically increase.
Cath Longhurst EBP South and Basingstoke Consortium CEO said ‘This is great news for us as we celebrate 20 years and for the young people (aged 4 – 18) and businesses across Hampshire.
EBP South provides a range of career services, programmes and events for young people that have become increasingly essential for young people to develop employability skills; and raise their aspirations.
